You’re all set for the Big Day, congratulations! Now, the next big thing to look forward to is the honeymoon – your first holiday as newly weds. The question is: where? Of course, it has to be dreamy and romantic, but you’re not sure if you want to jet off to places everyone has been.
To help you find that special honeymoon destination, we spoke to our travel guru friends Mr & Mrs Smith, who’ve recently launched their bespoke honeymoon service, about the top spots of 2015 (and then some). If nothing else, leave it to the Smith Travel Team to design something personal for you.

What’s trending for the honeymooning set?
A lot of honeymooners are opting for multi-stop itineraries that combine exciting activities and experiences with the all-important relaxation and romance. This helps couples to have a honeymoon experience that both will enjoy, especially if one likes exploring and adventure, while the other simply want to lounge the pool and sip margaritas at the beach bar.
Where are some of the hottest honeymoon spots right now?
Sri Lanka is a hot honeymoon destination at the moment as it offers amazing history and culture, misty mountain ranges covered in tea plantations, and secluded white sandy beaches that stretch for miles. Many are pairing a trip to Sri Lanka with a relaxed beach stay in an overwater villa in the Maldives.
South Africa is also popular due to its diverse offerings including wonderful beaches, soaring mountains, vast vineyards and outstanding safaris.
Of course, there’s Italy, a perennial favourite for honeymoons. Well, no surprise there – its whitewashed, cliff-hugging hotels, glittering beaches and moonlit terraces, the Amalfi Coast screams romance.
Where to stay?
In Sri Lanka, stay at Ceylon Tea Trails, a quartet of lakeside tea planters’ villas with spring-fed pools and all-inclusive dining. Living Heritage Koslanda is a remote rural retreat that has just joined the collection; we love its hilltop infinity pool and authentic Sri Lankan food. If you’d rather be by the beach, bed down at Reef Villa & Spa, whose manicured lawns, meandering koi ponds and stylish pavilions are just an hour south of Colombo.
Every single one of our Maldivian hotels has ‘honeymoon’ stamped all over it, but we love Huvafen Fushi for its underwater spa. Teaming a stay here with a Sri Lankan adventure will make for an incredible holiday.
Our founders, the original Mr & Mrs Smith, honeymooned at La Residence in South Africa’s Garden Route & Winelands. If it’s good enough for them, it’s probably good enough for us! For Italy, Il Salviatino in the Tuscan hills takes the cake, thanks to its Baroque flamboyance, four-poster beds, fresco-decorated ceilings, superb service and sarcophagus bathtubs.
How can one begin to plan the perfect honeymoon?
- Think about what you like to do as a couple: how much down time, and how much activity? Do you want to experience the country’s culture, or to simply relax on the beach?
- Plan ahead. Spontaneity is all in the planning. Your honeymoon should be the trip of a lifetime, so don’t leave anything to chance.
- Tailor-make your trip by talking to the experts. You’ll make more progress in a 10-minute phone conversation with an expert than to spend an hour flicking through a brochure.
- Know your budget. Be mindful of long-haul flight costs if you’re on a budget. You might prefer to spend money on luxe hotels rather than splurging on a long-haul flight that leaves nothing in the kitty for accommodation.
- Don’t try and do too much. Strike a balance between activities and downtime, and be sure to consider travel distances, and any domestic flight times.
Any packing tips?
Pack light. Bring versatile pieces that can be dressed up with a few bold accessories for eveningwear, or dressed down for the beach or lazing by the pool. You want to look sexy on your honeymoon so don’t forget your beauty essentials – a good moisturizer, an eye cream like La Prairie Essence Caviar Eye Complex, sunscreen and some tinted lip gloss should do the trick. Also, pack half your clothing in each other’s suitcase so if one person’s luggage goes AWOL, you’ll still have something to wear.
