Everyone knows that the whole point of getting married is to go on a romantic honeymoon. After the stress of the big day, you need to escape to a beautiful destination for the most relaxing, rejuvenating retreat you can get your newly-ringed hands on. To help you find a sublime spa vacation, the bedroom experts at Mr & Mrs Smith have found five of the world’s most calming stays, where relaxation – and satisfaction – is guaranteed. Have a stare at these gorgeous, peaceful hotels and villas in Thailand, Indonesia and beyond...
Mesastila, Yogyakarta, Indonesia
If the sound of a hotel surrounded by volcanoes, set on a coffee plantation and home to a blissful spa with a Turkish hammam doesn’t perk you up, check your pulse – are you breathing? Guests at MesaStila have an expert Jamu-Master (traditional doctor) at their disposal; book a private consultation and you’ll leave with personalised healing remedies (the secret to eternal youth, perhaps?). Things kick off on a healthy note at breakfast, where guests can choose from five herbal Jamu drinks; keep your smugness levels sky-high by having an Indonesian salad for lunch, followed by a dip in the octagonal infinity pool. Even the pool’s H2O is good for you – it’s fresh spring water. You are on honeymoon, though, so you do need to treat yourselves: opt for the undisputed honeymooner’s hot spot, Arum Villa Four, which has a vast private balcony looking out onto the untouched forest.
Smith Extra: 20 per cent discount on a spa treatment (GoldSmiths get the same discount on a second treatment) and a bag of coffee on departure.
Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, Phuket, Thailand
Anantara Mai Khao has a salt sommelier. That’s how seriously it takes attention to detail. It also has a spa with seven luxe treatment rooms, perfect for indulging in a Thai massage, scrub, body wrap or Ayurvedic therapy. Post-treatment, take yourselves to the beach, sprawl around by the main pool, learn to rustle up some Thai classics at the cookery school, or set off on a guided adventure: jungle exploring, wildlife watching, sailing and sea cruises, rafting, diving, elephant trekking, art tours and private surfing lessons. If you’re really lucky, you might even witness baby turtles hatching on the beach. After all this adventure, you’re going to be tired! Have the best night’s sleep (or not, as you wish – #honeymoon) in a gorgeous Sala Pool Villa, which has a silk-covered day-bed, a full-size pool and an al fresco terrazzo bath.
Smith Extra: An hour's unlimited Anantara signature cocktails for two.
Font Santa Hotel, Mallorca, Spain
We’re of the opinion that, if the Romans did it, it’s worth doing. That goes for dipping in the thermal waters near Fonta Santa Hotel, which spring from underground aquifers at a balmy 38ºC. They’re a mineral-rich cocktail of sodium and chlorine salts, magnesium, calcium, sulphur, potassium and more – no wonder Caesar’s crew were fans. Fonta’s minimal white interiors continue the serenity and, since no kids are allowed here, everyone speaks at a soothing volume. You could easily lose a day or two in the hotel’s spa – you’re on honeymoon, after all, and it does have three treatment rooms, a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym – but the hotel has other treats in store, including a romantic restaurant. Everyone is allowed to break the rules now and then – start the day with pancakes covered in melted dark chocolate. Save room in your suitcase for some jars of local sea salt, so you can recreate watery nirvana when you get back home.
Smith Extra: A private Jacuzzi session for two.
Blancaneaux Lodge, Belize
You’d expect a mega-bucks movie director to know a thing or two about wellness, and Francis Ford Coppola doesn’t disappoint with his jet-set jungle-meets-rainforest hideaway in Belize. Blancaneaux Lodge lets you get back to nature (with perfect pizzas, a unique ‘shell phone’ intercom system, free WiFi and hand-made organic bath products thrown in for good measure). Naturally, the Waterfall Spa is worthy of A-listers. Hop in the hot pool by cascading waterfalls; hop out for a papaya body polish, salt-glow scrub or other rejuvenating rubs. Honeymooners don’t have to frown over which room to opt for: go with one of the Honeymoon Cabanas or the Deluxe Honeymoon Cabanas, which have slate-lined, mineral-salted plunge pools, huge bathrooms decorated with double sinks, vast square baths and colourful handmade tiles. While you’re here, go for a romantic riverside canter on two of the resident horses (there are 30 steeds to choose from).
Smith Extra: A half-hour Thai massage each.
Como Shambhala Estate, Bali, Indonesia
Just thinking about our runner-up for Best Spa Hotel in the 2014 Smith Hotel Awards relaxes us. That foliage-clad, river-valley setting; those mind-numbingly blissful spa facilities that include floating treatment rooms, poolside yoga and a climbing wall; the residential retreats held throughout the year, with visiting experts holding courses and seminars; the restaurants’ delicious, organic food that continues the healthy theme without sacrificing flavour. This is no time to hold back, so bed down in the Tirta-Ening residence, which has a private entrance, terrace, waterfall pool, balé and Jacuzzi – oh, and a six-ton carved stone bath. Rooms even come with yoga mats, so you don’t have to bring your own.
Smith Extra: A Como Shambhala aromatherapy gift; GoldSmiths will also receive a 60-minute massage for two for five-night stays or more.
